John “Gungie” Rivera, Founder of the Cristian Rivera Foundation
Tell us about what prompted you to create the foundation.
I started the Cristian Rivera Foundation because no parent should ever have to bury their child, especially due to a devastating disease like Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG). After losing my six-year-old son, Cristian, to this rare brain stem tumor in 2009, I made a promise to dedicate my life to finding a cure. Watching Cristian suffer as DIPG slowly took away his ability to walk, talk, eat, and move was heartbreaking. I knew I had to do something to ensure no other family would endure such unimaginable grief.
What is your charity doing now?
Supporting our mission is deeply personal, and there are many ways to get involved. You can donate, volunteer, become a board member, attend our gala, participate in our annual 5K, or help spread awareness about DIPG. Every contribution—big or small—moves us closer to finding a cure.
Our foundation is fully committed to funding critical research for DIPG, focusing on groundbreaking clinical trials and genetic research. We've proudly supported the incredible work of Dr. Mark Souweidane at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and as the Director of the Weill Cornell Medical College Pediatric Brain and Spine Center. Thanks to efforts like his, we've seen remarkable progress—before 2012, there were no survivors of DIPG. Today, five patients have responded positively to treatment, a milestone we are proud to be part of.
We're also honored to fund genetic research by Dr. Oren Becher at Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Mount Sinai Kravis Children's Hospital. This work is critical to understanding and ultimately defeating this disease.
How many people have you been able to help?
Since the foundation's inception, we've had the privilege of empowering countless patients and their families facing the challenges of a DIPG diagnosis. Beyond funding vital medical research, we provide crucial support for families navigating this devastating journey, ensuring they don't face it alone.
Who are the most important guests at your event?
The most important guests are, without question are the children, families and individuals directly impacted by DIPG. Their courage and resilience inspire everything we do.
What drives a person to charity?
For me, it’s hope that no other family will have to endure the pain we went through. Every small victory, every breakthrough, and every moment of progress fuels our determination to keep fighting. Success for me would be the day we can finally say we've found a cure for this terrible disease.
Which celebrities are collaborating with you today?
The Cristian Rivera Foundation currently boasts an impressive roster of celebrities on its board. What would you like to change or improve?
Our ultimate goal is to find a cure for DIPG, an incurable disease. We also aim to expand our research efforts and provide even more comprehensive support for families affected by this diagnosis. The more resources we can gather, the closer we come to achieving this vision.
Are there any new goals and ideas for 2025?
In 2025, we will continue to fund promising clinical trials, raise awareness, and provide unwavering support for families facing DIPG. Our mission remains steadfast: finding a cure and ensuring no child or family has tonavigate this journey alone.
